Surgeons

The history of the Russian Society of Surgeons (RSS) lasts for more than 150 years. Whole the time, the Society has been uniting and keeps on consolidating  the efforts of Russian surgeons to solve complex issues of surgery and related specialties jointly. It is its main task which was proclaimed at the 1st Congress of Russian Surgeons in 1900. The decision to establish the Society was made at the Founding Congress on April 20, 2007, so by now the Russian Society of Surgeons has been working  for 18 years.

The Russian Society of Surgeons annually conducts s more than three major all-Russian events aimed at gathering together  and educating specialists, as well as  launches field-specific training programs constantly. 1,314 events have been held by now. More than 300,000 certificates of additional education have been awarded to participants of RSS programs. Every year the Society helps to resolve over 30 legal cases in practice of surgeons, as well as provides them with legal advice. At the moment, the Society includes more than 7,500 professionals.

Aleksey Shabunin
The President of the Russian Society of Surgeons is Aleksey Shabunin
Director of the Botkin Moscow Multidisciplinary Research and Clinical Center, Chief Surgeon and Endoscopist of the Moscow Health Department, Head of the Surgery Department of the Russian Medical Academy of Continuous Professional Education

Biography:

From 1984 to 1990, he was a surgeon at the Central Clinical City Hospital in Kemerovo.
From 1991 to 2001, he was the Head of the Liver and Pancreas Surgery Department and the Director of the Kuzbass Regional Hepatology Center.
Since 2002, he has been the Professor of the Surgery Department of the Russian Medical Academy of Medical Sciences.
From 2001 to 2011, he was the Deputy Chief Physician for Surgery at the Botkin State Clinical Hospital, Moscow.
From 2011 to 2013, he was the Chief Physician at the Pirogov State Clinical Hospital No. 1, Moscow.
From 2013 to June, 2024, he was the Chief Physician at the Botkin State Clinical Hospital, Moscow.
Since July 27, 2024, the scientific status of the institution has been upgraded to the Botkin Moscow Multidisciplinary Research and Clinical Center. At the moment, he is the Director of the Botkin Moscow Multidisciplinary Research and Clinical Center.
From 2014 to the present time, he has been the Chief Surgeon of the Moscow Health Department.
In 2022, he was elected an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences and elected the President of the Russian Society of Surgeons named after V.S. Savelyev.

Scientific Activity:

Professor Aleksey Shabunin has published 513 printed works, 9 monographs including Minimally Invasive Abdominal Surgery (international manual), the First National Manual on Simulation Training, Tactics of a Surgeon (practical manual), Pancreonecrosis (monograph), etc. He has received 48 patents for inventions on topical issues of surgery.

Under the direction of Professor Shabunin 19 candidate and 9 doctoral theses dedicated to the improvement of results of diagnostics and surgical treatment of patients with diseases of liver, pancreas and other abdominal cavity organs, were defended.

Moscow School of Surgery

In 2024, the “Moscow School of Surgery” Educational Program was launched in Moscow to train surgeons in the areas developed by the Russian Society of Surgeons. The program is based on the principles of qualitative and safe performance of minimally invasive and open surgical interventions.

The purpose of the Program is to train with the use of high-tech equipment – High Energy Surgery, intra-corporeal suturing techniques, safe use of surgical suturing devices, safe performance of laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

The planned result of training for a medical organization is standardization of safe performance of laparoscopic cholecystectomy, reduction in a number of complications when working with electro-surgical equipment and suturing devices, increase in a number of surgeons who know and use the intra-corporeal manual suturing technique.

More than 250 specialists have participated in this Program up to date.
